Simonson Equipment was founded on a lifetime of experience that began long before the company itself.
In 1977, Barry Simon started his career at age 17 as an apprentice mechanic at Barlow, the South African Caterpillar dealer and the largest in the world at the time. He quickly advanced through his apprenticeship, becoming a journeyman and building a deep technical foundation in heavy equipment repair and service.
In 1988, Barry emigrated with his family to Toronto, Canada, where he joined Crothers, now Toromont Cat. There, he became Service Manager at head office and played a key role in growing and strengthening the service department.
In 1992, a family visit to Atlanta changed everything.
Stepping off the plane dressed for a Canadian winter, the family was met by relatives in shorts and t-shirts, a clear sign they were somewhere very different.
During that trip, Barry connected with Yancey Brothers, the local Caterpillar dealer, secured a meeting the next day, and was hired immediately as Regional Service Manager.
Within six weeks, the family made the permanent move to Georgia.
At Yancey Brothers, Barry managed service operations across three locations in Austell, Gwinnett, and Calhoun. He grew the department to 138 employees, expanded operations to three shifts per day, and helped develop the company’s main hydraulic shops, significantly increasing service capabilities.
In 2000, Barry founded Simonson Equipment, Inc. in the Atlanta area.
The company began by focusing on used heavy equipment sales and sourcing, helping customers buy and sell machines through trusted relationships built over decades in the industry.
By 2004, the business had grown into a full equipment sales and service yard in Suwanee, Georgia, serving contractors, businesses, and equipment owners throughout the region.
In 2008, Daniel Simon joined the business during the height of the financial crisis after graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Finance.
With limited opportunities in the finance industry at the time, Daniel began helping in the family business and quickly became a key part of its future.

In 2010, the company faced a major challenge when the property they operated from was lost, forcing an unexpected move.
Instead of slowing down, Simonson Equipment pivoted.
We reduced inventory and focused on international equipment exports, allowing the business to stay strong while the domestic market struggled.
As the market recovered, we transitioned back to serving the U.S. heavy equipment market, rebuilding inventory and expanding operations.
As demand increased, Simonson Equipment expanded into heavy equipment rentals, giving customers flexible options to access the machines they need without long-term commitments.
In 2024, we opened our current location in Doraville, GA near Spaghetti Junction, and launched a full shop and field service department.
